What Is Going On At Leiser’s

Summer 2009

Lawn Equipment. Leiser’s has been selling high quality lawn equipment for 60 years. Today many consumers don’t consider the benefits of service, parts, and warranty support that the premium brands offer. Many of today’s consumers purchase this low cost low quality units from the Home Centers and discount centers without a thought of who will service the equipment. We perform service on most discount brands however our customers are always given priority in our shop.

Ethanol information could fill a whole website. Ethanol is bad. In your computer controlled car Ethanol will cause a slight drop in fuel mileage and power. However in the lawn equipment and marine industry it is destroying engines and fuel systems. Problem 1 is Ethanol added to gasoline can shorten shelf life to as little as 30 days. Problem 2 is Ethanol attracts water into the fuel system Problem 3 Ethanol damages aluminum and rubber parts. Problem 4 In hand held equipment Ethanol can cause lubrication oil to separate from fuel and raise the engine temperature to the melting point of internal engine components. All of our engine manufactures have warranty exclusions for damage Ethanol causes to fuel systems.   (as in the last government mandated fuel additive MTBE more problems to follow)

We have been selling and renting Echo equipment since 1973. Echo makes a full line of hand held lawn and garden equipment. Weed Trimmers, Leaf Blowers, Chain Saws, Hedge Trimmers and many specialty products. Echo is used by many commercial cutters because it is a serviceable unit. A serviceable unit is a product that is supported with long warranty’s replacement parts and quality construction. Some of the imported Home Center products are sold as throwaways with limited or no parts availability.

Toro We discontinued selling Toro equipment in 2007. The Toro Company moved away from the quality consumer product that we proudly represented for 59 years. It was no longer in our best interest to support the lower quality and rebranded products that Toro sells through non servicing dealers and Home Centers. We continue to service and support Toro products.

Tecumseh Engines Joins Murray and Troy Built as another casualty in the Big Box wars. This Fall Tecumseh decided to stop production of engines and riding mower transmissions This came about when one of there biggest customers switched to Chinese made engines. Most consumers don’t recognize the name but Tecumseh supplied 90% of the engines to the Snow Thrower industry. Sears was another big user of Tecumseh engines along with Toro and a few others. In the short term it has caused some shortages in the snow equipment industry as manufactures scrambled to find and test new engines for this snow season. In the long term parts availability will improve.

Chinese products are showing up in the Lawn Equipment Construction Equipment industry. We try to avoid Chinese products but the low prices are attractive. A Chinese Generators with what are almost exact copies of Honda Engines can be bought online and through discounters for about 1/3 the price of a Honda Generator. Many of these products were built by coppicing Honda and other products in violation of patent laws. Some are being slipped by custom inspectors with faked emission stickers. Finding service and warranty support on some of these products is impossible. Be careful of low cost Weed Trimmers, Chain Saws, Generators, ATV’s, Motor Cycles.

Sears Craftsman Lawn Equipment. When you purchase a Craftsman unit you are held under the Sears umbrella for warranty, service and parts. We try to avoid servicing Craftsman equipment because service manuals and parts are not made available to us. We will continue to do work on Sears mowers and tractors. Obtaining Parts through sears can ad days or weeks to the repair job  Before buying a Sears Craftsman mower make sure you are comfortable with Sears service.  We will not service Sears trimmer’s, chain-saws, and leaf blowers.

Why aren’t we open Sunday  This is a small business with small number of employees. To open Sundays we would need to add additional staff. Unfortunately as hard as it is to hire qualified people trying to find reliable people to work Sundays has been impossible. Rather then open Sundays without the staff needed to serve our customers we will remain closed. If you need equipment Sunday we have a special Sunday Rate.
