What’s a Handcycle |
|
I bought my first handcycle in 2005 to get in shape for hip surgery. The Handcycle was developed by a cyclist as a cycling cross training tool. It adapted very well to disabled sports and today there are National and International organizations that sanction races, rides and other events for Handcycles. I found it to be a great workout and ride almost every day. I average about 14 miles per hour on my 13 mile loop around Forks Township. As a racer I can finish a 26 mile course in about 1 hour 35 minutes.
I have some handcycle links or contact me if you are looking for further information or want to try a Handcycle. |

Nazareth Adult Soapbox Derby Last Spring I got involved with a group in Nazareth running an adult Soapbox Derby. 15 cars were entered into the first race. www.point-o-eight.com/soapbox.htm is the link to the site. Or Google Nazareth Adult Soapbox Derby. Cars can be built very inexpensively. My first car cost about $80.00 for steel, wood, paint, and wheels. The wheels I use are used wheelchair wheels I bought on E-bay. The website includes results pictures links to video’s and rules for building a car.
2009 Update For 2009 I added 2 new cars to our team. I built the 2.0 on the same frame as last years car but built a fiberglass body that resembled Mario Andretti’s 1969 Indy winner. My research and travel took me to the Indianapolis Speedway Museum where there is a copy of Mario’s 1969 winning car.
The 2009 race was held on May 2 when I arrived I was told Mario Andretti would be attending the event and when he did arrive he visited our tent. I can describe it as a thrill but to have him looking over my hand built model of his orange number 2 was very cool. He signed the hood of the car he answered a few questions about the Brawner Hawk and his last words when he left the tent were “if it runs hot stay on it” as a description to his badly overheating DOHC Ford V8 in May of 1969.
Car number 3 the X-15 was built out of a old pedal car to safely get Peggy Prentis down the hill. It was not built for speed and unfortunately never made it out of the second round. Next year Peggy wants the brakes removed and fast wheels. Last years car the U 17 driven by Ron Bealer and the 2.0 won every heat and met in a 2 car race for the championship. The aerodynamic 2.0 easily beat the U 17 but our team Sawfish Racing took first and second.
Mario Andretti spent all day at the event and worked as the finish line flagman. The few hundred people in attendance got to meet up close and personal the man regarded as the Worlds Greatest Race Car Driver. He was very friendly and approachable by all except for the local newspaper The Express Times Who’s Staff failed to recognize a local legend. |
